turquoise and enamel

Turquoise and enamel really do make a perfect pair — especially when accompanied by glittering gold! Not only are they visually stunning together, but their use in jewelry extends back to ancient times:

  • According to Brittanica, enamelwork likely originated in ancient Greece, first seen in Mycenean metalwork — specifically, a gold royal scepter in Cyprus — dating to the 11th century BCE. The cloisonné technique has been used to create enamel jewelry since about the 4th century BCE. Enamel jewelry has been trending in the past few years given its vivid colors, liquid appearance, incredible shine, and fantastic durability. Whatever shapes, sizes, or colors are used, enamel jewelry always makes a statement.
  • According to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), ancient Egyptians actively mined Turquoise during the second and third millennia BCE. Some evidence points to Turquoise mining in Ancient Egypt as far back as 5000 BCE! According to the Gemological Institute of America, Turquoise has long been considered “a stone that guarantees health, good fortune, and protection from evil.” In modern times, along with Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise has been celebrated as the historical birthstone for the month of December.

We’ve written about Turquoise many times in the blog, and we’ve featured some fantastic enamel jewelry in the past, such as our customer-favorite Diamond Star Collection. But our latest collection brings them together in a new and wonderful way. Both Turquoise gemstones and turquoise enamel jewelry (made by fusing pigmented powdered glass to a metal base at high heat) serve as glossy, vibrant showcases for the iconic greenish-blue color. For this collection, we’ve paired it with gold, further amping up the shine factor. With their versatility, quality, and polished yet down-to-earth aesthetic, these pieces are bound to become favorite everyday staples in anyone’s jewelry collection.
