As June approaches, we honor White Moonstone as our Gemstone of the Month. Alongside Pearl and Alexandrite, Moonstone is a June birthstone. In fact, the International Gem Society (IGS) reports that Moonstones are the favored June birthstone in Germany and throughout Scandinavia. We’re also honoring that age-old “rule” shared by legions upon legions of mothers and mother-in-laws over the years — namely, that you shouldn’t wear white until after Memorial Day. Whatever you believe about the validity of that advice, June is open season for wearing white… including White Moonstones!

What Is the Meaning of White Moonstone?

The most common meaning of White Moonstone is that it is a stone of love, luck, and protection. It’s also associated with growth, fertility, and new beginnings. But to understand the meaning of White Moonstone, it’s helpful to begin by focusing on its appearance. Picture a full moon shimmering from behind a gossamer layer of clouds, and you’ve pretty much got White Moonstone. 

As related by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Hindu mythology believes Moonstone is “made of solidified moonbeams.” According to the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA), the Romans also imagined the stone to be frozen moonlight. It’s not hard to see why, given how White Moonstone scatters light. This phenomenon, known as adularescence, is created as the gemstone forms, when Moonstone’s two intermingling feldspar minerals cool and separate. When light falls between these thin layers, it scatters to create adularescence — a seeming inner light. 

Moonstone’s inner light makes it a popular choice for meditation, bringing tranquility to those who gaze upon it. It also inspired the gemstone’s long association with the moon, which is in turn associated with fertility and growth cycles, the change of seasons, protection for travelers, and romance.

Indeed, in many cultures, the meaning of White Moonstone is “the Lover’s Stone.” As IGS relates, many lovers exchanged Moonstones to restore love after a fight, and some people thought Moonstones could help wearers to stay youthful-looking (and thus ostensibly more lovable?). Moonstone lore also says that someone seeking true love can use Moonstone to envision and summon it. 

What Are the Healing Properties of White Moonstone?

The supposed healing properties of White Moonstone include promoting fertility, abundance, renewal, and women’s health. It is also thought to calm the emotions, reduce anxiety, and promote inner vision, growth, and strength. 

GIA particularly calls out Moonstone’s legendary power to bestow good luck. IGS also mentions Moonstone’s association with good luck alongside its association with fertility, love, and sleep. Whatever your life situation, the supposed healing properties of White Moonstone are likely to have something befitting your world. After all, who among us couldn’t use a little more love, luck, growth, strength, and renewal in 2021?
