Recently we checked with our friend, Melanie, at Chelsea in Boulder on springtime in the foothills, travel plans & life’s little luxuries. We love her responses and are sure you will, too. (Thanks, Mel!)

  • How would you describe your store? I would describe Chelsea as “easy chic”. Our customers love our down-to-earth approach in customer service, as well as easy and fashionable pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways. From a fun patterned dress to your basic white t-shirt, we are certain that your Chelsea finds will be your favorite pieces in your closet.
  • How long have you been in business? Chelsea has been in business as a Boulder favorite for almost 15 years! I bought the store from founder Jessica Helson about 3 years ago, which is how long we have been at our current location on east Pearl Street.
  • Do you have a favorite line?  Is there a new line we should all keep an eye open for? I carry a large assortment of designers, including well-known lines like Vince, Theory, Calypso, James Perse and Sanctuary. My favorite part of buying however, is bringing in fantastic new lines that you may not have heard of or find anywhere else. This spring, I did just that by bringing in several new designers. They have been a hit! My personal favorite is a line called “Stark X”. They make beautiful cotton and silk tops that are the perfect go-to with jeans. These pieces have been flying out the door so I recommend coming in to try on!
  • What is the one accessory you can’t live without? Definitely a Chan Luu scarf. If you don’t own one yet, you need to invest. They are the best scarves and a Chelsea customer favorite by far. They come in an assortment of colors in a lush silk/cashmere blend. You can make a simple jeans and t-shirt look so stylish with a pop of color in a scarf.
  • What styling advise do you share with all your customers? Accessorize. It could be my Texas roots talking, but do not be afraid to accessorize an outfit. Whether it’s a scarf or a cool necklace, it will totally change the look. Don’t worry about “being boring”. I am a huge fan of a simple black top and jeans. When you add that perfect accessory, it ups the ante of the outfit.
  • What has surprised you the most since you took over the store? The loyalty of my customers. I have THE best customers. It doesn’t matter whether they are local or just come visit when they are in town, they love Chelsea and love to support local business. I am truly touched and humbled by the nice words my customers share about the store. It is never difficult to go above and beyond for them.
  • What are you looking forward to most this spring? The new lines. As I mentioned earlier, I am bringing in some really cool designers. Next time you stop in, you will see some brands you don’t recognize. That is what makes boutique shopping so fun.
  • What do you love about Boulder/Colorado in the springtime? Brunching outside. I love a fun Sunday brunch with friends. Restaurants with rooftops and patios are abundant in Boulder and it’s so fun to take advantage!
  • Spring break vacation plans?  What is your favorite vacation destination? This year I will be vacationing home to Texas to see my family. You can’t beat the beach in Mexico for spring break, but my favorite spot is right here in our state! Telluride has been a favorite vacation spot of mine for years. Actually so much that I am getting married there in the fall! If you have not been yet I recommend going this summer.
  • Are you a minimalist packer or an over-packer?  Any packing suggestions for the rest of us?- I am an over-packer, unfortunately. I don’t recommend over-packing. I have started a new technique and it seems to be working. Try on all of your outfits for your trip. If you don’t feel 100% in it at home, you won’t wear it out while you’re on vacation. Just scratch it and go with something else. If you love your outfit before you leave, you won’t need to bring 100 “just in case” tops and t-shirts.
