Rose Cut Diamonds reflect light in a different way than the Diamonds you may be used to seeing. Learn why it's perfect for a Valentine's Day by candlelight.

In preparation for Valentine’s Day, we’ve already shared why we love Rubies and Diamond Slices. We’d be remiss if we didn’t highlight Rose Cut Diamonds, which feel almost custom-made for the love-, romance-, and rose-soaked holiday. Read on to learn why Rose Cut Diamonds are an ideal choice as Valentine’s Day gift ideas this year — especially if candlelight is involved.

What Is a Rose Cut Diamond?

Rose Cut Diamonds are Diamonds cut in a way that resembles the spiral of a rose bud. They have flat bases, and each Diamond’s peaks are cut into a faceted dome. This creates a larger surface area for reflecting light.

According to Lang’s “Antique Jewelry University,” Rose Cut Diamonds first appeared in the 16th century, increasing in complexity over the years. Not only did the number of facets increase, but their positioning changed. Rose Cut Diamonds can have anywhere between 3 and 24 facets. Contrast this with Brilliant Cut Diamonds, which have a conical, triangular shape at their base and can have more than double the amount of facets.

Why Does the Cut of a Diamond Matter?

As the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) explains, the cut of a Diamond impacts how the Diamond’s facets interact with light. So while you may rightly think of a Diamond’s cut as a beautiful shape in and of itself, the cut is also about creating the Diamond’s special brightness, scintillation (i.e., sparkle), and fire (i.e., light-scattering, rainbow-creating abilities). According to GIA, “Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.”

Rose Cut Diamonds interact with light in a different way than, say, Brilliant Cut Diamonds. Whereas Brilliant Cut Diamonds are designed to dazzle in any type of light, a Rose Cut Diamond has a more romantically subtle and diffused luster. In Lang’s words, “Nothing glimmered better by candlelight than rose-cut diamonds.” Indeed, in the right light, Rose Cut Diamonds almost seem to glow.

Why Are We Talking About Rose Cut Diamonds Now?

Today’s jewelry designers — including Bloom Jewelry, obviously! — have fallen in love with the romantic, understated beauty of the Rose Cut Diamond. As fewer and fewer vintage Rose Cut Diamonds are available, we’re delighted to do our part in bringing the gorgeous cut back into the limelight. Or should we say… back into the candlelight.

Rose Cut Diamonds have also experienced a resurgence in engagement rings. Lily Collins, Jennifer Aniston, and Matthew McConaughey’s wife Camila Alves all received Rose Cut Diamond engagement rings.
